Yesterday I joined the press conference in the Cite du Temps in Geneva about the new watch certification based on new quality standards for the Swiss watch making industry. This news was communicated by Omega and METAS (Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology), more specifically by Nick Hayek of the Swatch Group, Stephen Urquhart, Andreas Hobmeier and Raynald Aeschlimann of Omega and Christian Bock of METAS. This METAS certification is nothing ground breaking. Basically Omega is admitting they could do better in past but COSC was enough ... now as they feel the pressure from Rolex and Grand Seiko they have to ensure their movements run +0-->+5 secs a day while in past they could run from -4 -->+6 secs a day.

I wonder how many watches they had in past that were in the lower and maximum limits ...

Also the capability to withstand 15 000 gauss is not that much considering they use a non metallic escape wheel (silicone one).

Also to note is number of watches to be certified
the certification will result in 400.000 – 500.000 Omega watches featuring the ‘Officially Certified’ wording on the dia
so basically we can see that Omega is not a restrict brand as about half a million are sold every year ...

Fully agree with you. I guess I didn't explain myself well. Omega makes great watches but I think they are over marketing themselves with some of the claims. Those marketing gimmicks work well though with the general market.
